Summer School FAQ

1. I have registered online, how will I know that my son/daughter is enrolled?

After you have completed your registration for summer school, an email will be sent to the email address that you provided. It will state that your son/daughter has successfully registered and it will include a copy of the information you provided.


2. My son/daughter attends a different school board; can they take a summer school course with Simcoe Muskoka Catholic District School Board (SMCDSB)?

Yes! Even though your son/daughter attends a school in a different school board, he/she can still enroll in summer school with the SMCDSB. Fill out the online registration form for summer school. The application form requires a student's Ontario Education Number (OEN) which can be found on the students’ report card.

3. Does SMCDSB charge a fee for summer school courses?

No, currently there are no fees for summer school courses.

4. What is the schedule of a typical day of summer school?

School begins at 8:30 a.m. and ends at 2:30 p.m. Students are provided with two 15 minute breaks and a half hour for lunch.

6. Does my son/daughter need to wear a uniform to summer school?

This year, courses will take place online. Students are not required to wear a uniform; however, there is a dress code in place, where students are required to dress appropriately.

7. Is transportation provided to and from summer school?

No. Summer school 2021-2022 is online so transportation is not required this year.

8. Does my son/daughter need to bring any supplies with them to summer school such as paper or pens?

Yes, students are responsible for bringing basic supplies relative to the nature of the class. i.e. paper, pens, pencils, calculator, phys. ed clothing, etc. The teacher will advise if there is anything else that is needed.

9. My son/daughter is currently in Grade 6, is there any summer school course available for him/her?

We have a variety of free summer camps for students entering Grade 7, 8 and 9.

10. My son/daughter has just completed Grade 8, how will I know whether the HIF10 or the MTV Camp is the best option for them?

MTV camp provides students with the opportunity to enrich, reinforce and enhance their literacy, numeracy and science skills in a fun, hands-on environment.


HIF10 provides students with the opportunity to enhance learning and study skills and to also earn a high school credit.

11. When are summer school report cards available and do they get mailed out?

Report cards will be mailed to the address you provided on the registration form at the completion of the session (August). The home school will also receive a copy of the report card which is placed in the students’ file.

12. How does my son/daughter know which class to attend and who their teacher is?

A teacher will be contacting students the week prior to the summer school start date.  Class lists will be posted inside the school on the first day to assist your son/daughter with locating the classroom.

13. How can I upgrade a mark in a course?

Students must take a full credit course (4 weeks) in order to upgrade their mark.  Please click the link for more information: Upgrade a mark

14. When can I register for summer school 2020?

Registration is now open. Register for your summer program using the Online Registration Form

Registration closes Friday, June 19, 2020 at 12 p.m.

15. When is summer school 2020?

Full credit face-to-face courses will run from July 6 - July 31, 2020 at St. Joseph's Catholic High School in Barrie.

Summer e-learning courses will run from July 6 - July 31, 2020 (please refer to the e-learning page).

Summer Co-op courses will run from June 29 - August 25, 2020 (please refer to the co-op credit page).

The MTV Camp will run from July 6 - 17, 2020.


Can a credit be recovered if a student did not achieve a passing grade?

Depending on course availability, SMCDSB students may recover a credit in the first two weeks of summer at their school by registering with their Guidance department.
